Rysianka and Romanka - loop from Żabnica, mountain hut and trails

Romanka

Romanka (1366 m) is the highest peak of the Lipowski Wierch and Romanka group. Its relative height, measured from the floor of the Soła valley near Cięcina and Wieprz, reaches almost 1000 meters. The summit lies within the Romanka Nature Reserve, established in 1963. It protects natural fragments of the old Carpathian primeval forest that have survived in the upper parts of the massif, which is why the area around the summit feels quite wild and wooded. Romanka itself is not one of the most scenic peaks in the Żywiec Beskids, though: the top is forested, and wide panoramas only open up on the nearby meadows. The trail, however, has a great atmosphere and, above all, is a bit quieter than nearby Rysianka or Hala Boracza.

Rysianka

Rysianka (1322 m) is one of the most distinctive peaks of the Żywiec Beskids. Although the summit itself is wooded, its slopes hold two meadows: Hala Kaziorka and the much larger and more scenic Hala Rysianka. Hala Rysianka is the main draw here. The open space gives you a panorama of the surrounding peaks, and in good visibility you can see Babia Góra, Pilsko and even the Tatras. No wonder the meadow has been one of the most visited spots in this part of the Beskids for years. Hala Rysianka is also home to the PTTK Rysianka mountain hut, an important point on the local trail map. Several routes leading to different parts of the Żywiec Beskids cross nearby, so Rysianka works both as a destination in itself and as a stop on a longer hike. Interestingly, the area around Rysianka was once used as mountain pasture. Grazing sheep and cattle shaped the landscape for years, and the distinctive meadows are what remains of that tradition. Today you can rest here, enjoy the views, eat at the hut, continue along one of the many trails, or stay the night in the hut or in a tent.

PTTK Rysianka mountain hut

The PTTK Rysianka hut stands at about 1290 m, right on Hala Rysianka. The building has about 50 beds in rooms for 2 to 10 people. The rooms are of a basic hiker standard, and some have bunk beds. Each room has a washbasin, while the toilets and showers are shared and located in the corridors.

Tent field

If you'd rather sleep closer to nature, the hut also runs a tent field on a lovely, spacious meadow. You sleep in your own tent and can use the hut's facilities, including toilets, hot showers and boiling water. No reservation is needed, and a night costs 30 PLN per person. There are also two campfire spots on the field, but you have to bring your own firewood. Keep in mind that the place is very popular, and on warm summer nights it can get really crowded.

Parking

Many trails to popular mountain spots such as Romanka, Rysianka and Hala Boracza start in Żabnica, so there are plenty of parking lots here. Most of them charge a fee, though. We managed to park in a free lot right at the start of our trail. It's a little out of the way, so it is less crowded than the lots closer to the main roads. Black trail from Żabnica

Those who know us a bit better know that we don't like returning exactly the way we came. Whenever we can, we much prefer loop routes, because they let us see more on a single hike and walk different stretches of trail. This time was no different. Starting from Żabnica, we chose a variant that took us up Romanka and then on to one of the most distinctive meadows in this part of the Żywiec Beskids: Hala Rysianka. This is where you'll find the popular PTTK hut and a vast meadow that is also a favorite with people who want to spend a night in the mountains in a tent.

Trail description

From the parking lot mentioned above we set off on the black trail. At first the route follows a wide forest path alongside a small stream. After a while the path narrows and the climb becomes more noticeable. We walk through the forest the whole time, following the black markings. Along the way we reach Chata Słowiańska, which has a small shop, accommodation and a toilet. The toilet costs 2 PLN.

At the chata we switch to the blue trail and head towards Romanka. At first the route drops gently, and the peak we'll soon be climbing starts to appear between the trees. Along the way we cross a small, open clearing and then head back into the forest. From here on the trail climbs more clearly.

The path keeps getting narrower, and in places the climb is quite steep. The first views of the surrounding peaks and the houses in the valley begin to appear between the trees. As you can see in the photos, a cloud also caught up with us on the way, which gave this stretch of the trail a special atmosphere.

We met very few hikers along the way, so pushing through the misty forest on the narrow, in places heavily overgrown path felt a little magical.

After a fairly strenuous climb we finally reach the summit of Romanka. The top is densely wooded, though, so there is no viewpoint here. We are also inside the Romanka Nature Reserve, which protects natural fragments of forest. Under the reserve rules, you may not camp here or leave the marked trail. From Romanka we continue towards Rysianka, where a completely different landscape awaits.

We now follow the yellow trail towards Rysianka. The route descends gently, and more views open up between the trees. Soon we come down onto another meadow, Hala Łyśniowska. At the fork we turn off towards nearby Hala Rysianka.

After only about 10 minutes of climbing we reach the vast meadow, which was far busier than the rest of the route. Many people had come on foot, by bike and even… on horseback. Plenty of hikers were resting and eating at the hut. Although it was still quite early, a good number of tents were already pitched on the meadow, and lots of people were lounging on blankets in the sunshine. We also used the spot for a longer break and a second breakfast. After the rest we headed back along the yellow trail to the fork at Hala Pawlusia, where this time we turned onto the green trail. This section runs through the Lipowska Nature Reserve.

The green trail turned out to be much busier. On the way we passed plenty of people heading up to Rysianka. The path itself is mostly fairly narrow and stonier than the trail we had climbed earlier. This time it was mainly downhill, in places quite steep and hard on the knees.

Most of this section runs through the forest, so views appear only occasionally. The last 2 km of the trail follow an asphalt road and bring us to the bus stop and the main parking lot in Żabnica.

Don't miss the turn onto the black trail at the bus stop, as it shortens the route a little. After a final stretch of asphalt we finally reach our car and close the loop.

Summary of our route

In total the loop came to 17.22 km with 929 m of ascent. It took us about 4.5 hours, not counting the longer break on Hala Rysianka.

The whole route was really enjoyable and, despite the fair distance and elevation gain, not particularly difficult, although some of the climbs did take it out of us. Our favorite part was the quieter, less-traveled section up to Romanka. Another big plus of this loop is its variety: forest paths, a few interesting climbs, views of the surrounding mountains and, at the end, a rest on the vast Hala Rysianka.

Green trail to Rysianka

The fastest trail to Rysianka from Żabnica (the fastest and shortest one overall starts in Złatna). Most hikers who want to reach Hala Rysianka quickly go this way. The route runs mainly through forest, and although it is shorter, some sections involve a fairly steep climb. It's the best choice, especially if you're heading up with a big backpack.

Black and blue trail from Żabnica to Romanka

The fastest trail to Romanka if you want to avoid the busier routes around Hala Rysianka. A narrow, wooded trail with a lot of atmosphere, leading to a summit at 1366 m.
